What to Expect on Your Commercial Shoot Day
For most business owners, a commercial shoot is something they've never done before. That's completely normal and it's one of the reasons clients tell us the shoot day was more enjoyable and less stressful than they expected.
The secret is preparation. Here's a full breakdown of what a typical shoot day looks like with Vudo, so you can show up confident and ready to get the most out of it.
BEFORE THE DAY: PRE-PRODUCTION
The best shoot days are won in pre-production. Before we ever show up with cameras, we've done the work: concept development, shot list creation, location scouting, and a detailed call sheet. You'll know exactly what we're shooting, in what order, and what you need to prepare.
This phase is also where we align on your brand story what makes you different, who your customer is, and what feeling you want the final film to create. The more clearly we understand your business, the more intentional every shot will be.
THE SHOOT DAY: HOUR BY HOUR
Call Time & Setup
The crew arrives early. We set up lighting, test audio, and do a full location walk-through before a single frame is shot. Good setup time means zero wasted time during the actual shoot.
First Shot
We start with the most complex or lighting-dependent setup while energy is high and the light is right. Usually this is the hero shot the one that anchors the whole commercial.
Talking Head / Interview
If there's a founder or team member speaking on camera, we usually do this mid-morning when people are warmed up but not tired. We coach you through it no memorized scripts, just natural conversation that we shape in the edit.
Lunch Break
A proper break. We review footage, adjust the shot list if needed, and reset for the afternoon. This is also a good time to flag anything you want more of or less of before we move on.
B-Roll & Detail Shots
The afternoon is for texture close-ups of your product, your team in action, your environment. These are the shots that make an edit feel cinematic instead of flat. We move fast here and shoot wide.
Golden Hour / Final Shots
If the schedule allows, late afternoon light is magic. We save any exterior shots or wide establishing shots for this window. The light does half the work.
Wrap
Crew breaks down, gear is loaded. You'll walk away knowing exactly what we captured and when to expect the first cut.
HOW TO SHOW UP READY
💡 The number one thing that slows down a shoot day is indecision. Know your brand colors, know which team members will be on camera, and make any space decisions ahead of time. We'll handle everything else.
- Wardrobe: Avoid busy patterns and bright white. Solid colors photograph well. Dress how you'd dress for your best client meeting.
- Location: If we're shooting at your business, do a clean sweep the day before. Clear counters, remove clutter, make the space feel intentional.
- Team: If anyone else is appearing on camera, brief them in advance. No surprises on shoot day.
- Energy: You don't need to perform. Just be yourself. We direct you through every shot and we're very good at making people feel comfortable on camera.
AFTER THE SHOOT: POST-PRODUCTION
Once we wrap, the real magic starts. We comb through every clip, select the best takes, and begin building the edit. The first cut typically comes back within 2 weeks. You'll get 2 rounds of revisions to make sure every detail is right before we deliver the final film.
Final delivery includes the full-resolution master file plus optimized exports for web, social, and paid advertising every format you need, ready to go.
